Jonathan Lasker

Jonathan Lasker

Jonathan Lasker was born in New Jersey in 1948. He currently lives and works in New York City.
From the late 1970s, Lasker developed a formal language made out of different processes of mark-making, repetitive patterns and fluid lines like scribbles either loose or loaded with paint creating flat edged areas. His compositions remain nevertheless controlled and structured and oscillate between intuition and analysis. Lasker explores the possibilities of painting, aiming at a system "which could legitimise itself" (Jonathan Lasker). The artist questions the mechanics of abstraction and the viewer’s inherent identification with figuration. “My goal is to bring the viewer to the threshold of narrativity without crossing over, to bring the viewer to the state of pure pictorially. Therefore I decided to use unrecognizable abstract forms as surrogate figures. This would convey the pure condition of being a thing in space.” Since the early 1980s, his work has been exhibited in many one-man shows, including the ICA Philadelphia, Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Kunstverein St. Gallen. He participated in the 1992 Documenta IX in Kassel.
