Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac Salzburg presents Still Life by the iconic American photographer Irving Penn (1917 – 2009). From the well-known series of CigarettesStreet Material and Flowers, as well as unique thought-provokingly positioned objects, the works on view will be spanning over six-decades. The exhibition features around 30 photographic prints created in New York for publications, such as The New Yorker, Vogue, Look and Vanity Fair, but also whilst traveling. He produced some of the most compelling still lives of our time that continue to inspire artists of all genres.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday in 2017, an extensive retrospective titled Centennial took place at the Grand Palais, Paris, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, at the C/O Berlin, as well as the Instituto Moreira Salles in São Paolo. The exhibition comprised around 240 works including a comprehensive presentation of Penn’s diverse still lives, some of which will also be on view in the Salzburg show. Irving Penn’s photography has been subject of numerous exhibitions worldwide including Irving Penn: Underfoot at the Art Institute of Chicago (2013), ); Irving Penn: Diverse Worlds at the Moderna Museet, Malmo (2012) in Sweden, which travelled to the Kumu Art Museum, Tallinn, Estonia; Irving Penn: Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, London (2010) and Irving Penn: Small Trades at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (2009-2010). His work forms significant parts of the world’s most renowned public and private photography collections.
