The Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac has the pleasure to present a series of new photographs by the American artist Jack Pierson.

Born in 1960 in Plymouth, MA, Pierson started his career in the early 80’s in New York after having finished his studies at the Boston College of Art. During his time in Boston he became part of a group of artists, such as Nan Goldin and Paul Morrisoe, who later became famous as the ‘Boston School’.

His work documents the journey of an itinerant artist, but at the same time he produces a portrait of America as Pierson travels through it. He records fragments of America’s landscapes, both urban and rural, as he explores the seduction of lush, sexually charged places such as Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the subtle beauty of the desert.

Pierson approaches his works in various media from the perspective of a photographer or a filmmaker capturing life of his alter ego. His work suggests a backward glance in time that mingles memoirs with the present. Viewed together, his photographs, word pieces, paintings, drawings and installations are the poetic redemption of his past. Each tells a story of love, desire, loss, hope and loneliness.

With the series ‘Unidentified Youth’, Pierson traces the last hours in the life of a young man, who committed suicide, which Pierson witnessed as he was looking out of a window of the hotel he was staying at the time in Paris.
