L'Atelier du Sud Group exhibition featuring Alvaro Barrington at the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh in Arles, France

18 November 2023—28 April 2024
Fondation Vincent Van Gogh in Arles, France

In 1888 in Arles, Van Gogh dreamed of sharing his roof with other painters, both Parisian and local, to create an authentic living studio. Between 2020 and 2023, American artist Laura Owens organized and ran L'Atelier du Sud, a residency in a house in Arles. Today, the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles is inviting the 24 participants to come together to reflect on this stage of their artistic journey. Alvaro Barrington will present his work alongside the other talented artists.

The works presented, whether drawn from their Arles experience or specially imagined for the exhibition, highlight the adventurous and sensual nature of this group, but also the promise offered by collaboration as a form of artistic practice. Ranging from sculpture to video, with a strong focus on painting, they reveal how living spaces condition creation, and question the notion of the domestic as a place for artistic experimentation.
