Irving Penn's series The Bath: 'Like a ritual' Exhibition review by Marianne Sittelle

Cette série de quatorze clichés en noir et blanc d'Irving Penn (1917-2009) a été peu montrée en France, mais a été exposée aux Franciscaines de Deauville récemment. En septembre 1976, le photographe américain se rend à San Fransisco en plein « summer of love », l'été de l'amour. En studio, il tend son fameux rideau de théâtre. Un fond neutre concentrant le regard des spectateurs sur six danceurs dirigés par Anna Halprin, pionnière de la danse postmoderne. Le groupe réalise, tel un rituel, des gestes du quotidien, se lavant avec douceur. Penn ne montre ni les bassines ni l'eau. Les danseurs sont nus, magnifiques, sculpturaux. Cézanniens. La série, en rien provocante, fut refusée par le magazine Look. Le photographe ne la tirera finalement qu'en 1995.

This series of fourteen black-and-white photographs by Irving Penn (1917-2009) has rarely been shown in France, but was recently exhibited at the Franciscaines in Deauville. In September 1976, the American photographer went to San Francisco at the height of the "summer of love". In the studio, he set up his famous theatre curtain. A neutral background to focus the spectators' gaze on the six dancers led by Anna Halprin, a pioneer of postmodern dance. Like a ritual, the group performed everyday gestures, gently washing themselves. Penn shows neither the basins nor the water. The dancers are naked, magnificent, sculptural. Cézanne-like. The series, in no way provocative, was rejected by Look magazine. The photographer did not finally printed them until 1995.
